
Shipyard Expansion to Create 125 Jobs
November 16, 2009, Salisbury, MD: Chesapeake Shipbuilding announced today that it has signed a contract to acquire approximately 3 acres of property adjacent to the shipyard. This would enable the yard to expand significantly and create as many as 125 new jobs. At present, the land that Chesapeake Shipbuilding plans to acquire is an empty lot with a derelict bulkhead on the Wicomico River. Chesapeake Shipbuilding is in the process of acquiring the approvals from local and federal authorities necessary to complete the project.
New Prefabrication Shop Complete

November 5, 2009 Salisbury, MD: Chesapeake Shipbuilding of Salisbury, MD announced today that its third new building is complete. The new 7,000 square foot prefabrication shop is a significant upgrade from the older building that it is replacing. The new climate controlled building has been fitted with overhead cranes and state-of-the-art equipment. It will be large enough to accommodate the construction of hull sections in a controlled indoor environment. The building represents Chesapeake’s commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
Plating Started On Fifth Vane Brothers Tug
October 16, 2009 Salisbury, MD: Chesapeake Shipbuilding announced today that plating has begun on the fifth tug for Vane Brothers of Baltimore, MD. The 3,000 hp tug is 94-feet and will be powered by two Caterpillar 3512 engines with 6:1 reverse reduction gears to conventional shafts. This is the fifth tug in the contract for six.
Cruise Ship Independence Two Months Ahead of Schedule

October 9, 2009 Salisbury, MD: Chesapeake Shipbuilding announced today that the new cruise ship it is building for American Cruise Lines is on budget and two months ahead of schedule. The vessel is currently in its outfitting stages. Most of the piping and electrical systems have already been installed. The Independence is due for delivery in June of 2010.
The Independence is a new 223 foot cruise ship for American Cruise Lines. It was designed by Chesapeake Shipbuilding in house, and is 5 feet wider than any previous ship that has been built for American Cruise Lines. This was done to facilitate larger staterooms and private balconies. The Independence has been equipped with active wing stabilizers designed and built by Rolls Royce in Scotland. It has Caterpillar C32s rated at 1400 BHP, which will allow the ship to cruise at 13 knots.
Tug Charles Burton in Outfitting

October 4, 2009 Salisbury, MD: Chesapeake Shipbuilding announced today that the tug Charles Burton entered its final stages of outfitting. All of the steelwork has been completed on the vessel, and the electrical, piping, and joiner systems are nearing completion. Earlier in the week the upper pilot house was lifted on. The tug is scheduled for an on time delivery in December of this year.
The Charles Burton is the third tug in a contract for six with Vane Brothers of Baltimore, MD. It is 94 feet long and 32 feet wide. It is equipped with a single drum hydraulic winch from JonRie of New Jersey and twin Caterpillar 3512 main engines capable of producing a combined 3,000 horsepower. Its two sister ships, Elk River and Sassafras, have already been delivered to Vane Brothers and are now dedicated to 30,000 barrel barges.
Tug Charles Burton Launched
August 6, 2009 Salisbury, MD: Chesapeake Shipbuilding of Salisbury, MD launched the tug Charles Burton today. It is the third tug in a line of six for Vane Brothers of Baltimore, MD. Yesterday, the Charles Burton was moved from its fabrication facility to the launch ways. It was built in a controlled indoor environment, then rolled out and positioned for launch. The Charles Burton will join the growing Vane Brothers fleet, hauling tank barges on near coastal routes. It is 94 feet long and 32 feet wide. It is equipped with twin Caterpillar 3512 main engines capable of producing a combined 3,000 horsepower and a single drum hydraulic winch from JonRie of New Jersey. It is a sister ship to the Elk River and the Sassafras, two other tugs that Chesapeake has already delivered to Vane Brothers. Their newest ship, the Elk River was just completed last month on time and on budget.
Chesapeake Shipbuilding designs and builds steel commercial and industrial vessels between 90 and 300 feet. The yard has upgraded its facilities immensely in recent years to expand its production capacity. It has two new hull fabrication buildings, a 150 ton crane capacity, and three launch ways. They have also just signed contracts to build a new prefabrication building, which will further increase the yard’s production speed and efficiency.

Chesapeake Shipbuilding Delivers 2nd of 6 Tugs

July 20, 2009. Chesapeake Shipbuilding Corp of Salisbury, MD delivered the 2nd of 6 tugboats to Vane Brothers of Baltimore, MD today. Elk River will join Sassafras, the 1st tug that Chesapeake built for Vane Brothers, in hauling 30,000 barrel tank barges on near coastal routes. Construction is already well underway on the remaining 4 tugs, each of which will be delivered over the next year and a half.
Elk River produces 3,000 horsepower with twin Caterpillar 3512 main engines through 6:1 reverse reduction gears to conventional shafts. It is equipped with a single drum hydraulic winch from JonRie of New Jersey and has accommodations for seven crew members. Elk River is 94’ long with a 32’ beam, and a 13’ depth.
Chesapeake Shipbuilding built Elk River in a controlled indoor environment, in one of their new hull fabrication buildings. The tug was then rolled out to the launch way where it was side launched into the Wicomico River. Chesapeake has upgraded its facility greatly in recent years to increase its production capacity and efficiency.
Tug Sassafras Delivered to Vane Brothers

November 12, 2008 Salisbury, MD. Chesapeake Shipbuilding delivered the tug Sassafras to Vane Brothers of Baltimore, Maryland today. The tug is the first of six that Vane Brothers has contracted Chesapeake Shipbuilding to build. Sassafras will be dedicated to 30,000 barrel tank barges on near-coastal routes. Construction of the second, third, and fourth tugs for Vane Brothers is underway at Chesapeake Shipbuilding’s Salisbury facility.
Chesapeake Shipbuilding has been in Salisbury, MD for 27 years and has built many commercial vessels between 80 and 250 feet at their facility during that time. Chesapeake Shipbuilding has designed and built small luxury cruise ships, tugs, car ferries, restaurant vessels, and larger passenger vessels. October 16, 2008 Salisbury, MD. Chesapeake Shipbuilding delivered a brand new car ferry to the State of Delaware today. The “Woodland ferry” will operate on the Nanticoke River from Seaford, DE. It has double the capacity of an older ferry that it replaced. It is the third vehicle ferry that Chesapeake Shipbuilding has designed and built.

October 17, 2007 Salisbury, MD. Officials of Chesapeake Shipbuilding, Corp. have announced they have signed a contract to build a 223’ luxury overnight cruise ship to be delivered in 2009. The new ship, designed by Chesapeake Shipbuilding has a beam of 50-feet: 5-feet more than previous Chesapeake Shipbuilding designs for small cruises ships, which allows for larger private balconies and staterooms. This ship will also be the first one equipped with active wing stabilizers, manufactured by Rolls Royce in Scotland. The new ship will also be equipped with a 250 hp stern thruster as well as a 350 hp bow thruster. State of Delaware Car Ferry Order from Chesapeake Shipbuilding
Jan. 5, 2007 Salisbury, MD. Officials of Chesapeake Shipbuilding today announced they have received the order to build the new "Woodland" ferry for the State of Delaware. The ferry was also designed by Chesapeake Shipbuilding and is the 3rd car ferry Chesapeake Shipbuilding has designed and built. Construction started immediately.
